Are moneyline bets worth it? ›

Often, it can be advantageous to bet a team on the moneyline and the point spread, especially if you're betting on the underdog. If the team wins outright, you'll win both bets; if they lose outright but cover the spread, you'll walk away a small winner (or small loser) while still taking a shot on an outright win.

HOW DO YOU CALCULATE MONEYLINE PAYOUT? To calculate a moneyline payout, you take the odds of the team winning and multiply it by your bet amount. The resulting number is your potential payout, not including the original bet.

What Does a +200 Money Line Mean? A +200 money line would mean that if you placed a $100 bet, you would win $200. It also tells you that the team is not expected to win, as it is the underdog in the game.

If you bet on a positive moneyline (e.g., +200), you could win $200 plus your original $100 if your team wins.

NFL moneyline betting FAQs

How often does the moneyline favorite win in the NFL? Since 1985, NFL moneyline favorites have won 66.5 percent of the time. Moneyline favorites finished 188-88-1 SU (67.1%) during the 2020 NFL season.

Underdogs are given plus moneyline odds, meaning a $100 bet would yield that moneyline's total if the underdog wins the matchup: +300 odds means a $300 profit; +550 odds means a $550 profit; +1200 odds means a $1200 profit.

Remember that lower odds return a higher profit.

Betting on the underdog is riskier than betting on a favorite, but a higher risk means a higher potential reward. The "longer the odds," or the less likely, the more money you could win.

To calculate “+” odds, divide the odds by 100 and multiply that product by the wager amount. To calculate the payout of a $50 bet on the Buffalo Bills, divide 115/100 and multiply by $50 (1.15 x $50 = $57.50). A winning $50 moneyline bet on the Bills returns $107.50 to the bettor.

A +7 spread is very commonly seen in the NFL due to the scoring of a touchdown and a successful extra point. If the spread is set at +7, the underdog must either win the game outright or lose by fewer than seven points in order to cover. For the favorite to cover, they must win by more than seven points.

What is +500 money line? ›

For example, if the odds for a particular team to win a championship are +500, this means that a bettor would receive a payout of $500 for every $100 they wagered if that team goes on to win the championship.

Whereas negative (-) odds tell you what you have to bet on the favorite to win $100, positive (+) odds tell you how much you'll win for every $100 you wager on the underdog. So, a team with odds of +120 would pay $120 in profits on a $100 wager.

A positive moneyline is prefixed with a plus sign (+), indicating the potential profit from a $100 bet. For example, a moneyline of +200 means a $100 stake could yield a $200 profit. Conversely, a negative moneyline is prefixed with a minus sign (-) and represents the amount needed to stake to win $100.

Negative odds show the favorite, and so they tend to represent a better chance of winning than odds with positive numbers. Of course, the drawback to this is that your profit potential is smaller when you bet on the favorite.

A three-way moneyline asks you to pick one of the two sides as the winner OR if the game will end in a tie or draw. So, if you're wagering on a sport that doesn't have ties, like college basketball or the NBA, you generally would pick between Team A and Team B to walk away as the winners.

Parlaying moneylines can be a successful strategy when customers believe in the outcome of a game but want less of a risk factor. Lowering the risk leads to a lower payout, but a higher probability of being graded as a winning wager.

As a result, the potential payouts can be vastly different. If you are betting on a sizable favorite, betting on the spread will offer a higher payout. But if you are betting on an underdog, betting on the moneyline will offer a higher payout.

While there are times when cashing out early makes sense, there are other scenarios when it isn't a smart strategy. When the end of the game is approaching and your team has a comfortable lead, you're better off waiting for the final result to maximize your profit.

Side bets can be entertaining and potentially offer higher payouts than the main blackjack game. However, they also have a higher house edge, which means they are riskier in the long run.
